In addition, licensed manufacturers must adhere to strict minimum specification and regular compressive strength tests as set out by Terraforce Head office, ensuring that the end user is supplied a quality product. Terraforce stackable, no-mortar retaining wall blocks adhere to local and international standards having undergone extensive laboratory testing – based on SANS 207, BS 8006 and ASTM-D6916-18 – by professional accreditation agencies over the last 4 decades. The block retaining walls can range from light gravity concrete retaining walls, to geogrid reinforced earth-retaining or heavy gravity, double skin retaining walls. The wide range of plantable interlocking retaining wall blocks is tailored to create environmentally friendly domestic or industrial installations and to support sustainable development in soil stabilisation. Suitable for commercial and residential precast block walls, small or large. Terraforce pioneered the hollow, reversible interlocking retaining wall system that is unmatched in its versatility, both in application and elevation. Member of the Concrete Manufacturers Association ( CMA) and a Level Four BBBEE Contributor. TERRAFORCE is a well-known and award-winning Cape Town-based company that offers interlocking concrete blocks manufactured by licensed manufacturers (retaining wall blocks) for environmentally friendly earth retaining walls and erosion control. You can compare the cost of various heights of wall using the tables to work out the most effect solution for your project. We have created a design table for each retaining wall type with a cost index. The blocks to the front of the wall act as a protective face. The soil behind the wall is reinforced using geo mat and acts as the retaining structure. Reinforced earth retaining wall – For high walls and if the soil conditions allow a reinforced earth wall can be very economical. This design uses less blocks then the traditional gravity wall. Inclined block retaining wall – The inclined wall is similar to the gravity wall but uses the incline to give it more gravity force. This creates a very effective wall using less blocks than the gravity design. The wall has reinforcement passing through it, that is connected to the foundation toe. Reinforced Block Retaining wall – This wall is a cantilever design and uses the foundation base as part of the structural element of the wall. The mass is greater than the forces that are trying to overturn the wall The foundation spread the load over a wide area. Gravity Retaining Wall – The gravity retaining wall uses its mass to resist the failure modes. There are a number of ways to build a wall using interlocking retaining wall blocks. Stability – The earth around the wall needs to be stable otherwise the whole area of earth and wall will slide and rotate. Sliding – The wall slides on its foundation Shear – The material being retained slides the wall on the foundation or block course Overturning – The material being retained pushed the wall overīearing capacity– The earth the wall is sitting on is soft and the wall sinks or slides The image below shows the failure modes of a block retaining wall: Once we understand the concepts we can use interlocking retaining wall blocks to solve the problem. Before we talk about interlocking retaining wall blocks, let me show you how a retaining wall fails.
